Lenses for Digital SLR Cameras are confusing to buy because there are several things you have to consider before purchasing . Firstly is the fact that the focal length is confusing ... the lens may say 28-100 but that is in 35mm terms & in Digtal SLR terms this will mean something totaly different depending on the make & model of the camera ... eg ... a 28-100 lens on a Canon 450-D would in fact be a 45-160 because a lens for the 350-D is 1.6x the value stated on the lens ... for the Nikon D-50 the 28-100 would be a 42-150 because that camera is 1.5x the value . Our chart at the bottom of this page gives you the details on the various sizes when made into Digital SLR terms for each camera .

We think that the best Lenses for Digital SLRs are those that have been designed just for Digital SLRs - D fitting Lenses . Older 35mm Lenses like the Canon EF Lenses will work on Digital SLRs but there may be a big loss in image quality because the Lenses were designed for normal 35mm SLR Cameras . D fit Lenses have been designed for Digital SLRs so tend to give better image quality .

Forget buying own makes like Canon or Nikon - the best value with no loss in quality are Sigma & Tamron . Both have fabulous quality secondary lenses - the 55-200 Telephoto zoom lenses as shown below .

This ia an ideal starter lens that is great for general home or holiday use . It has a good wide angle to short telephoto zoom range . The lens is very high quality so delivers sharp images . Designed for Digital SLRs .

Tamron 55-200 ( shown above ) ... £89 . Available to fit ... Canon D , Sony Alpha . Quality lens that is an ideal second lens . Zooms in to a much greater distance than the original lens you will get with your Digital SLR . Ideal for long range shots such as Sports Photography or Wildlife Photography . Designed just for Digital SLRs .

Sigma 55-200 ( shown above ) ... £ASK . Available to fit ... Canon D , Nikon D , Olympus E , Sony Alpha , Pentax D , Samsung G . Sigmas version of the Tamron 55-200 ( above ) has the advantage of being available to fit almost all Digital SLRs so if you dont have a Canon or Sony then this is the best bet for your second lens . Very well made & great optics giving sharp images . Designed for Digital SLRs .

Sigma 70-300 ( shown above ) ... £119 . Available to fit ... Canon D , Nikon D , Sony Alpha , Pentax D , Samsung G . This lens has been around for a long time now & was designed to fit on normal 35mm SLR Cameras . It has got a larger zoom range than the standard second lens of 55-200 but i think that image quality from the 70-300 is not as good as the 55-200 lenses because the 70-300 was not designed for Digital SLRs .
